New section of Riverside Walk and Cycle Path opens
8th April 2019
A newly completed section of the Riverside Walk and Cycle Path in Omagh has opened.
The new section includes a 750-metre pedestrian and cycle path connecting the existing Riverside Walk and Cycle Path to the pedestrian footpath at the Showgrounds Retail Park.
A pedestrian and cycle bridge across the River Strule has also been erected within this new section connecting the end of phase two of the walk from the St Lucia floodplain to St Patrick’s Park.
The opening of the new section of the Riverside Walk and Cycle Path is the latest development in the project which has been designed to connect Omagh from the town centre to the Derry Road with a continuous, safe and accessible 2.4 kilometre walking and cycling route.
The existing 200 metre footpath through the Showgrounds Retail Park will be upgraded to a similar standard in the near future and will mark the completion of the multi-million pound project.
Speaking about the opening of the new 750-metre section of the Riverside Walk, Chairman of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, Councillor Howard Thornton, said:
“The opening of the new section of the Riverside Walk and Cycle Path represents another significant milestone within this important project for Omagh which is helping to connect Omagh town centre to Strathroy and to bring the local community together.
The Riverside Walk and Cycle Path is already being very well used and we hope that with the opening of this new section, even more people will leave the car at home and make the short journey to the shops or to their workplace, school or college on their bicycles or by walking.”
The latest programme of works on the Riverside Walk and Cycle Path were completed by Fox Building and Engineering Ltd, Carrickmore.
The Riverside Walk and Cycle Path project is funded by Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, the Department for Communities and the Landfill Communities Fund administered by Ulster Wildlife.
