Fermanagh and Omagh District Council has launched a new free Tape Ball Cricket programme designed to help men get active.

The 12-week programme, funded by the Public Health Agency (PHA) as part of its Healthy Towns West Programme, is aimed at men aged 18 years and over who take little or no exercise and would like to try out a new sport or get back into Cricket.  Tape Ball Cricket is indoor with similar rules to ‘Street Cricket’, providing a great opportunity to get active in a relatively new sport.

The programme will commence on Tuesday 4 September 2018 (excluding 30 October) at the Omagh Leisure Complex 6pm – 7pm.

Speaking about the forthcoming programme, the Chairman of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, Councillor Howard Thornton, said:

“Fermanagh and Omagh District Council is, once again, delighted to be working in partnership with the PHA to deliver this innovative programme for men. Leading an active lifestyle is vital for physical and mental health and wellbeing. It is important that we find time in our increasingly busy lives to factor in the opportunity to exercise and I would ask prospective participants to encourage a friend, neighbour or family member to sign up to this opportunity to reconnect with the game of cricket or indeed try something new.”

Collette Brolly, the PHA lead on physical activity, said:

“A great way to get active is to do something you like and that’s why this programme is so fantastic as you have the opportunity to take part in an activity that you enjoy but might not have done in a number of years, or to try something new.

“It’s important to stay active right throughout our lives, as being physically active can have the positive benefits of; helping maintain your weight, reducing the risk of developing chronic conditions including some cancers and Type 2 diabetes, as well as reducing anxiety and stress.”

Availability on the programme is limited and places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. All participants will be required to complete a pre-exercise questionnaire. Participation on the programme is free of charge. Registration will open at 9.00 am on Thursday 16 August 2018.
