Hazardous Waste Prevention – Time To Detox

20th November 2018

Fermanagh and Omagh District Council is pledging it’s support for European Week for Waste Reduction (EWWR) which is taking place this year from 17th -25th November 2018.

The theme of this year’s European Week for Waste Reduction is “hazardous waste” and as part of the campaign, householders, businesses, schools and organisations are being encouraged to take positive action on reducing their consumption of products with hazardous contents as well as making sure that they are properly disposed of.

Speaking about European Waste Week for Reduction, the Chairman of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, Councillor Howard Thornton said;

“Fermanagh & Omagh District Council is actively demonstrating its support for this increasingly popular campaign through initiatives like the unwanted furniture and unwanted usable paint schemes, and I would encourage residents to get involved in taking action for themselves.

The Council, through these initiatives is playing its part in not only helping to reduce the amount of hazardous waste  going to landfill but also promoting the economic and social benefits to be gained by embracing the “reduce, reuse, recycle” theme.”

On average, 50 million litres of paint ends up in landfill or is incinerated across the UK every year. Consequently, Fermanagh and Omagh District Council’s Paint Reuse Scheme provides a sustainable alternative to paint disposal which is better for the environment as well as offering social and economic benefits.

This year our aim is to encourage everyone to get involved by donating any unwanted usable paint by bringing it along to the recycling centres at Drummee, Enniskillen, Gortrush, Omagh, Carrickmore, Dromore, Fintona, Irvinestown, Kesh and Lisnaskea. The paint is then made available, free of charge to residents and community groups for use in the home, garden or on community projects or by simply making your pledge to #TimeToDetox this EWWR18! Anyone donating paint during the European Week of Waste Reduction will be entered into a draw for a chance to win a Samsung tablet.
