Fermanagh and Omagh District Council’s Season of Irish Language Events Begins

24th August 2018

Fermanagh and Omagh District Council’s new season of Irish language events will commence with an information evening on Wednesday 5 September 2018 at 7:30 pm in Strule Arts Centre, Omagh.

The programme of events for the coming year, which runs from September to June will be unveiled at this event.  Well known Sion Mills Irish language activist Antaine Ó Fearghail will also give a talk on his personal journey and experience of promoting Irish in the North Tyrone/Donegal area.  Local traditional musicians will also provide entertainment and light refreshments will be served.

Indeed, Wednesday nights in the Strule Arts Centre  will provide much of the focus of this year’s programme. One of the highlights of the programme is the return of the weekly Irish language classes which start on Wednesday 12 September from 8 pm  –  9.30 pm. Once again, the classes accommodate all levels from beginners and improvers through to the more advanced student. The classes will run for a twelve week period.

Also returning to the programme is the Sean-nós and Set Dancing class which will take place in the Strule Arts Centre on Wednesday evenings from 6 pm – 7pm.  These traditional forms of Irish solo and partnered dancing are a great social activity as well as a fun way of keeping fit.

Singing in Irish classes are also scheduled for Wednesday evenings from 7 pm – 8pm in the Strule Arts Centre where participants sing in a group setting.  It is another pleasant social activity and a very effective way of improving one’s Irish.

Irish language classes will also run from September in outreach centres across the district as part of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council’s ” Irish in the community” scheme.
