As progress continues on the Enniskillen Public Realm works, a new drainage line will be installed on Darling Street as part of the infrastructural work required to support the £5.2 million project.

The Enniskillen Public Realm Scheme, funded by the Department for Communities and Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, will enhance the appearance of the town centre with improvements to footpaths, street lighting, landscaping and street furniture.

To facilitate this phase of the work and establish a connection to the existing drainage infrastructure at the junction of Darling Street and Queen Street, Darling Street will be closed to traffic from Monday 10 August – Monday 17 August 2020 inclusive. Queen Street will remain open during this period, however there will be lane restrictions in place in the vicinity of the junction of Darling Street and Queen Street.

While it is anticipated that the task of establishing the connection for the new drainage line will be completed by 17 August, the remaining drainage works along Darling Street will be facilitated through the closure of localised parking bays on a rolling basis over the following two weeks.

Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout and the traffic diversion route will be clearly signposted for vehicles. Parking will be prohibited on Darling Street while the drainage works are ongoing. To facilitate deliveries during this period, please contact Allan Fullerton, Trader Liaison Officer on 028 7954 9090.

The Chair of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, Councillor Chris Smyth said “While we appreciate that this may cause some disruption and apologise for any inconvenience to residents and businesses in the area, the drainage work is an essential part of the preparatory work for the Enniskillen Public Realm project and will ensure that Enniskillen town centre will have a drainage infrastructure network commensurate with the needs of the 21st century. It is also necessary to progress the Enniskillen Public Realm project which will, when completed, transform the town centre.”

The drainage works in Darling Street follow the completion of major drainage works on High Street and Church Street and the Regal Pass and Townhall Street areas of the town centre. The remaining drainage works at Darling Street and on Belmore Street and East Bridge Place will be completed before the start of the installation of the new natural stone footpaths which is expected to get underway in the Autumn.
