Green Flag Status

Two of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council’s flagship open spaces, the Grange Park, Omagh and the Broadmeadow in Enniskillen have retained their prestigious Green Flag Award status following a recent awards ceremony held at Queens University, Belfast.

The Green Flag Awards, first introduced in Northern Ireland in 2008 and awarded by the environmental charity, Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful, is an international benchmark standard for the management of parks and open spaces. It also acknowledges that the space boasts the highest possible standards and has excellent facilities.

Speaking at the awards ceremony, the Chairman of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, Councillor Siobhán Currie, said

“I am delighted that the hard work of the Council staff, in ensuring that the Broadmeadow and the Grange Park are accessible, environmentally sustainable and enjoyable places to spend time in, has been recognised through this award. Retaining Green Flag status for both areas clearly demonstrates Fermanagh and Omagh District Council’s commitment to ensuring that the public shared accessible spaces under its control are maintained to the highest standards and are attractive to the general public. I would also like to thank the members of the public who have played a key role in helping to maintain the Broadmeadow and the Grange Park as beautiful, clean and welcoming public spaces.”

Whilst the Council is delighted to receive this award, maintaining the standard of both areas will take considerable resources. The Council encourages users of the parks to clean up after their dogs and to take any litter or rubbish home with them. This will greatly assist in alleviating the pressure on resources and help tackle the increasing issue of littering and dumping that the District has recently been experiencing. This approach, along with the reporting of any antisocial behaviour, will work towards maintaining the great standard of the area for the benefit to both the local community and visitors to the area.

The Broadmeadow and the Grange Park are among a record number of 76 parks, open spaces and green areas across Northern Ireland to have been accorded Green Flag status this year.
