Fermanagh and Omagh District Council “Litter Champions” scheme, an initiative which allows individuals and groups to register as Council Volunteers to help keep local public places cleaner and more vibrant was recently relaunched by the Chair of the Council, Councillor Diana Armstrong.

Speaking about the scheme, the Chair of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, Councillor Diana Armstrong said;

“I am delighted to relaunch this initiative aimed at encouraging our residents to work in partnership with the Council to ensure that our district remains a vibrant and attractive place to work, live and visit. It will provide support for people to volunteer within their local communities to keep public places tidy and it is opportune that this scheme is being relaunched at the start of Volunteer Week and just in time for the start of the summer so we can commence our “big summer sweep”.

Our cleansing teams do a wonderful job in keeping the District tidy, a fact widely recognised regionally, given the district’s regular successes in competitions such as the Best Kept awards and Ulster In Bloom. However, the Council greatly appreciates the contributions of individuals and communities in offering their support to help maintain and improve our District through volunteering.

By supporting local litter collecting events, residents of the district can play a positive role in improving and protecting the environment by formally registering either in small family/friend groups or as part of larger community/sporting organisations.”

Fermanagh and Omagh District Council is committed to a cleaner, greener, and more vibrant District and undertakes a programme of cleansing to deal with litter, dumping, and fly tipping across the District each year. In the current year, it is estimated that the cost of this programme will be around £1.9 million. The Council also supports the principles of leave no trace and would encourage residents and visitors to use the bins provided for rubbish or take their litter home with them when out visiting parks and open spaces in the district .

As part of the scheme, Fermanagh and Omagh District Council will provide registered volunteers with the necessary equipment and advice on litter picking and will collect bagged rubbish left in designated areas once the litter pick of the area is finished.

By registering you are also supporting the Council by gathering valuable data on the amount and type of rubbish and problem areas, as well as helping us to promote cleaner communities.

Registration for the Litter Champion scheme will take place virtually on Monday 14 June from 1pm – 1.30 pm, Thursday 24 June from 5.30pm – 6.00pm or Tuesday 29 June from 6.30pm – 7 pm.
