Fermanagh and Omagh District Council is delighted to introduce a weekly online campaign to get families identifying and helping wildlife close to them. Entitled Backyard Biodiversity, the online campaign is encouraging families to watch and enjoy all the wonderful wildlife that makes their homes in back gardens.

Speaking about the new campaign, the Chair of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, Councillor Siobhán Currie said, “I warmly welcome this innovative initiative. In recognising that circumstances currently dictate that we are all spending more time at home and in our gardens at the moment, this is a fun way for young and not so young to spend some time outdoors learning about the wildlife which inhabit our gardens.”

This week, the focus is on garden birds. You can take part by downloading the ID sheet at www.fermanaghomagh.com and finding out the names of all the wonderful common garden birds. A fun activity would be to make homemade bird feeders with kebab sticks or wire, sticking on left-over cheese, raisins, cooked pasta or apples! Don’t forget to let us know what birds you spot. Feel free to send us your photographs and pictures to biodiversity@fermanaghomagh.com.

The Council is not the only organisation encouraging people to get out and enjoy their gardens. There are so many excellent online garden and wildlife activity sheets for you to enjoy right now; why not join up to the RSPB Wild Challenge https://www.rspb.org.uk/fun-and-learning/for-families/family-wild-challenge/ , discover the many Woodland Trust Nature Detectives worksheets at https://www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/blog/2020/03/kids-nature-activities-self-isolation/ or follow online so many more Nature Charities like Butterfly Conservation NI, Biodiversity Ireland and Ulster Wildlife, each regularly posting online on what wildlife to watch out for throughout Spring.
