Fermanagh and Omagh District Council has launched the 2020 Retail Heroes Awards in support of the local retail sector.

The awards, which aim to recognise the resilience, commitment and innovation shown by local businesses in response to Covid-19 over the last number of months, were launched by the Chairman of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, Councillor Chris Smyth.

Speaking about the 2020 Retail Heroes Awards, Councillor Smyth said;

“I have long admired our local businesses and recognised the tremendous contribution they make in providing local employment and contributing to the local economy. This year, more than any other year, the retailers of the Fermanagh and Omagh District Council area have demonstrated tremendous resilience and resourcefulness as they have adapted the way they do business in what can only be described as unprecedented and extremely challenging times.

“Time and again, these businesses and their employees have put themselves on the front line to ensure that others could still access essential items during lockdown. They have evolved the way in which they do business by introducing home deliveries and store collections and have invested in systems to help keep customers safe while they shop and, most importantly, they’ve kept going under the most difficult circumstances.

“Our local retailers are the cornerstone of the community and indeed the economy offering choice, value, personality and great service to towns and villages across the district.”

Continuing, Councillor Smyth added;

“As we approach the Christmas season, which is traditionally the busiest time of the year for our retailers, we can all demonstrate our support in a tangible way by shopping local and giving our support to these businesses to ensure their long term sustainability.

“The Retail Heroes Awards offers you, the customer, with the opportunity to recognise those businesses who have provided service to you over and above the norm and to show them we care and we appreciate their efforts.

“It is important to remember at this time that not all heroes wear capes. Some heroes deliver your granny’s groceries to her door. Some help you to pick out the perfect gift when you’re short of ideas. Some provide stickers and toys to distract restless toddlers while busy mums shop. Some heroes work in retail!”

Nominations to the 2020 Retail Heroes Awards are now open. Awards are open to retailers across the District – the winning business, the ‘Retail Superhero’ will receive a tailored marketing package worth £1,000 and the runner up receiving £500 of marketing support with both receiving a special Retail Hero Award.
