The Chair of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, Councillor Diana Armstrong, has welcomed Tuesday’s announcement by the Minister For Infrastructure Nichola Mallon, MLA, of her intention to proceed with the Enniskillen Southern By-pass Scheme.

Speaking following the announcement, Councillor Armstrong said;

“I welcome Minister Mallon’s positive announcement today regarding the Enniskillen Southern By-pass Scheme.

For those of us who live in Fermanagh, this scheme has been a priority for a long time. The scheme will directly link the A4 from Dublin Road at the east end of Enniskillen to Belcoo Road on the West of the town. This will reduce traffic through the town centre, alleviating the congestion which has impacted significantly on traffic flow in the town heading west and will prove an excellent link to Sligo and the North West. The inclusion of additional cycleways and footways are also to be welcomed while I believe it will also have a positive impact on tourism in Fermanagh by making the town and wider county more accessible.

The reduction in traffic through the town centre, will also have the added benefit of enhancing the town centre environment by improving air quality and noise levels and will enhance the experience of locals and visitors alike.

Fermanagh and Omagh District Council has lobbied extensively for the scheme to proceed and today’s announcement is a very positive outcome.”
