On Wednesday 23 October 2019, The Chair of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, Councillor Siobhán Currie hosted a reception at the Enniskillen Castle Museums, Fermanagh to mark the 25th anniversary of the Erne Carers.

Speaking at the reception, Councillor Currie said:

A dhaoine uaisle

Mar Chathaoirleach ar Chomhairle Ceantair Fhear Manach agus na hÓmaí, tá áthas orm fáilte a chur romhaibh go léir chuig Músaem Chontae Fhear Manach an tráthnóna seo.

Ladies and Gentlemen

As Chair of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, I am delighted to welcome you all to Fermanagh County Museum this afternoon.

I would like to extend a particularly warm welcome to the members of the Erne Carers group, in whose honour this afternoon’s reception is being held.

Erne Carers is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, and as Chair of the Council, I am delighted to have the opportunity to recognise this wonderful achievement and pay tribute to you for the excellent work you have undertaken and continue to undertake over the last 25 years.

I understand that Erne Carers group was founded 25 years ago as an initiative developed by Fermanagh Soroptimists Society. It was a response to a need which was identified by the soroptimists for an organisation to provide support for carers in the Fermanagh area. They felt that it was important that carers should be recognised for the important work which they do and that an outlet should be found for the carers to enjoy some time out for themselves.

The group meets once a month in the Westville Hotel and through the use of guest speakers, provide information and entertainment to the members. This little bit of downtime provides invaluable respite to the carers is only for a short time.

I commend you all for the tremendous work which you do. It was the former First lady, Rosalyn Carter who said ““There are only four kinds of people in the world. Those who have been caregivers. Those who are currently caregivers. Those who will be caregivers, and those who will need a caregiver.”

That is a fairly accurate synopsis. It is important however to look after those who are so selflessly looking after others and that is why the role played by Erne Carers in providing support and recognition for carers is so important.

On behalf of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council and on my own behalf, I would like to offer my sincere congratulations on reaching this silver jubilee and wish you every success for the next 25.
