Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful has announced that two of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council’s flagship open spaces, the Grange Park, Omagh and the Broadmeadow in Enniskillen have retained their prestigious Green Flag Award status for 2020/21.

The Green Flag Awards, first introduced in Northern Ireland in 2008 and awarded by the environmental charity, Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful, is an international benchmark standard for the management of parks and open spaces. It also acknowledges that the space boasts the highest possible standards and has excellent facilities.

The Chairman of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, Councillor Chris Smyth, said;

“I am delighted that the diligence and care taken by Council staff in ensuring that our parks, green areas and open spaces are accessible, environmentally sustainable and enjoyable places in which to spend time, has been recognised by both the Broadmeadow and the Grange Park retaining their Green Flag status. During these particularly challenging times, when the provision of high quality public spaces for people to use is more important than ever, retaining Green Flag status for both places, clearly demonstrates the Council’s commitment to ensuring that public shared accessible spaces under its control are maintained to the highest standards and are attractive to residents and visitors alike. I would like to thank the residents and visitors to the parks for helping to ensure that they remain attractive and welcoming public spaces.”

Whilst the Council is delighted to receive this award, the fourth consecutive year that both parks have been accorded this award, maintaining the standard of both areas takes considerable resources. The Council encourages users of the parks to “leave no trace” when they visit the parks or consider volunteer participation in the recently launched ‘Litter Champion’ initiative, of which details can be found on the Council website at www.fermanaghomagh.com.

This will greatly assist in alleviating the pressure on resources and help tackle the issue of littering and dumping that impacts on many districts currently.

The Broadmeadow and the Grange Park are among a record number of 78 parks, open spaces and green areas across Northern Ireland to have been accorded Green Flag status this year.
