Fermanagh and Omagh District Council has launched two ‘5k to 10k’ programmes, funded by the Public Health Agency (PHA) as part of its Healthy Towns programme, aimed at encouraging people aged 18 and over to adopt a healthier lifestyle.

The programmes, which encourage participants to further their training and fitness, will start on Tuesday 8 January 2019 at Omagh Leisure Complex at 6pm and the Fermanagh Lakeland Forum, Enniskillen on Saturday 12 January 2019 at 8.30am. All sessions will last for one hour and participation on the programme is free.

The programme will be led by fully qualified Fermanagh and Omagh District Council fitness coaches who will provide professional training, support and advice to help participants achieve the 10k goal.

Launching details of the ‘5k to 10k’ programme, the Chairman of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, Councillor Howard Thornton said;

“Fermanagh and Omagh District Council is committed to improving the health and well-being of all our residents. The Council is once again delighted to be working in partnership with the PHA to deliver this programme aimed at encouraging people to take those steps towards a healthier lifestyle. From seeing the success of the previous programmes, it is clear that participants derive a tremendous amount of satisfaction from seeing their fitness levels rise to the extent where they can complete a 5k or 10k run.”

Colette Brolly, the PHA’s lead for physical activity, said:

“Being physically active is very important in maintaining a healthy weight and can reduce the risk of many diseases including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, breast cancer, and colon cancer.

Being active is good for your mental health and can lift mood, reduce anxiety and help to protect against depression.

For anyone who has participated in the Couch to 5k programme they’ll know the benefits that taking your first steps to getting active can have. The 5k to 10k programme is a great progression of this and everyone who takes part will thoroughly enjoy the challenges and achievements of reaching their goals.”
