Fermanagh and Omagh District Council has announced the winner and runner-up in the 2020 Retail Heroes Awards.

The awards, aimed at acknowledging the resilience, commitment and innovation shown by local businesses in response to Covid-19 over the last number of months, were launched in November.

Announcing the winner and runner-up, the Chair of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, Councillor Diana Armstrong said;

“This year, more than any other year, the retailers of the Fermanagh and Omagh District Council area have demonstrated tremendous resilience and resourcefulness in the manner in which they have carried on their businesses in what can only be described as unprecedented and extremely challenging times. These awards were devised as a means of acknowledging their efforts in ensuring that their businesses adapted to new ways of service delivery as a consequence of the restrictions which were introduced by the Northern Ireland Executive to help curb the spread of Covid-19.

Businesses across the retail and hospitality sector took all precautions to make the shopping experience as safe as possible in our towns, and villages for all of their staff and customers.

I was amazed by the sheer volume of nominations, over 950 in total for businesses across a range of retail operations and the quality of the nominated businesses made the adjudication process very difficult.

After much deliberation, the winner of the 2020 Fermanagh and Omagh District Retails Heroes Award was Fermanagh Cottage Industries, based in Enniskillen. The runner-up was Mo’s newsagents, in Fintona

In their citations, the proposers outlined the positive impact both businesses made to their respective communities and their commitment to ensuring the safety of the shopping experience for their customers, often going over and above  what would be normally expected to ensure that the customer’s every need was met.

On behalf of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, I would like to congratulate the Fermanagh Cottage Industries and Mo’s Newsagents on their success and I would also like to express my gratitude to all those who took the time to nominate so many of our local businesses.

I would also like to take this opportunity to personally thank all of our local businesses for the tremendous efforts you have made over the past year and I trust that, as we move into 2021 and the rollout of the vaccination programme, better times await us all.”
