Culture Night 2017

Fermanagh and Omagh District Council has put together a packed programme of cultural and creative events to celebrate Culture Night 2017 on Friday 22 September 2017.

Culture Night is a UK and Ireland celebration of culture, creativity and the arts. Locals and visitors can enjoy a night of free entertainment, discovery and adventure.

Culture Night Enniskillen

Overview of activity:
Enniskillen Castle Museum will be a hub of activity. Come along and enjoy ‘Meet the Muses’, where visitors will be expertly guided through the new displays on the Fermanagh Lakelands, Enniskillen Town, William Scott Art Gallery and the Fermanagh Hearth, and, be inspired to learn more about those who influenced Fermanagh’s own writers, painters, artists and antiquarians.

There is an assorted mix of music and dance with performances from Connect Youth Dance in conjunction with Dylan Quinn Dance Theatre who will also be providing Zumba classes and dancing with the Fermanagh Concert Band. Enjoy cheer leading demonstrations from Jets Cheerleading, the Equinox Lantern Parade and Caritas choir.

Explore more exhibition displays with the ‘Through the Lens’ show which celebrates the Travelling culture and the Inniskillings military exhibition. Enjoy a stone carving demonstration by Michael Hoy, multi – language workshops and a poetry reading from Maria McManus. There will be an opportunity to see a screening of ‘Dust’ a short film based on a collaboration of dance and poetry, this one of many events that are part of the Fermanagh Live festival which also includes the Douglas Hutten exhibition in Waterways Ireland and, the R J Coulter exhibition in the Devenish Gallery.

Many more venues will open their doors for Culture Night Enniskillen. Enjoy an evening of music, poetry, art, crafts and food at the Buttermarket including an acoustic concert with performances from many local artists. Call into Headhunters Railway Museum to see the railway exhibition on display. Headhunters have also put together an exhibition in Enniskillen Library which is also the venue for the launch of Mary Gordon McBride’s book; the fourth in the series of ‘The Rare Auld Times’.

Overview of activity:
Strule Arts Centre will be buzzing with the sights and sounds of Culture Night from early afternoon until late evening, starting with the movie classic, Dr Zhivago, at 2 pm. Later that afternoon, children will have the opportunity to indulge in some music with Omagh Community Rhythms and Omagh Academy of Music. The little ones can get creative with art workshops and clay pinch pots. They can learn language through games, try drama workshops, or simply relax and enjoy the Lego Batman Movie.

Visitors will be able to experience a diverse mix of music and song with performances from the Omagh Ukulele Orchestra, Red Balloon Guitar Group, Omagh Community Choir and Walter and Ambre with the Asha Choir, the Irish singing group. The more active participants will have the opportunity to join in some Sean nós dancing, jiving demonstrations and learn some Latin dance moves while those of a more creative nature can try a Wild Wire workshop or clay modelling. Open Door Poetry Group and Omagh Arts Committee will offer poetry readings on the night and there will also be a chance to get ‘out and about’ in Omagh courtesy of a cultural walking tour of Omagh town.

Local cultural centres will open their doors to welcome people of all ages to sample the area’s creative offerings for free throughout the evening. Why not take this opportunity to try out a new activity? Enjoy storytelling and crafts for children at Omagh Library, decorate a bird box with Omagh Ethnic Communities Support Group at Omagh Community House. Visit An Creagán Visitor Centre or Dún Uladh Cultural Heritage Centre for traditional music.
