Waterways Ireland Loughfest

Published: 16th May 2016

This year’s Waterways Ireland Loughfest event will take place on Saturday 21 May 2016 at the Fermanagh Lakeland Forum, Broadmeadow, Enniskillen.

The annual extravaganza, a free event sponsored by Waterways Ireland and organised by Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, promises to be a fun-packed day for all the family, with a range of activities taking place on Lough Erne and the Broadmeadow from 12 noon until 4 pm. Activities include climbing walls, bouncy castles, laser tag and much more!

The RNLI will also perform a number of safety demonstrations on the water throughout the afternoon and plan to land its rescue helicopter at the event at approximately 3.30pm – a spectacle not to be missed! Please note, the arrival of the helicopter is dependent on RNLI safety and rescue work commitments on the day.

Children and young people will also have the opportunity to try a new sport or develop a sporting skill with a series of free ‘Come and Try It’ canoeing, angling, stand up paddle board, football, hockey and mini-rugby sessions.

Dawn Livingstone, Waterways Ireland Chief Executive commented “The Waterways Ireland Loughfest in Enniskillen receives our support because it engages more families and young people in waterway recreation in an innovative fashion, leading the way with a wide range of outdoor events and activities. Thousands of people have enjoyed the Loughfest and have become great enthusiasts for their watersport and ambassadors for the event, the Erne and Fermanagh.”

Speaking about the event, Fermanagh and Omagh District Council Chairman, Councillor Thomas O’Reilly, said:

“Waterways Ireland Loughfest is a great way for families to get outdoors and get active while having lots of fun. With activities taking place both on and off the water the event is a great way for children and young people to try a new sport and develop confidence on the water.”

Admission to the event and all its activities are free of charge.

Places on the ‘Come and Try It’ activity sessions are limited and will be allocated on a first come first served basis in advance of the Waterways Ireland Loughfest event.
