Paralympic Sports Programme for Young People

Published: 27th February 2017

A free ‘come and try it’ Paralympic sports programme for young people under the age of 18 will take place in Enniskillen and Omagh in March.

The programme will provide young people with or without a disability, their friends and family with the opportunity to participate in a range of different wheelchair sports such as basketball, football and boccia.

The three week programme, organised by Fermanagh and Omagh District Council in partnership with Disability Sport NI, will take place at the Fermanagh Lakeland Forum on Monday evenings at 4.30 pm commencing 6 March 2017. The programme will take place at Omagh Leisure Complex on Thursday evenings at
6 pm commencing 9 March 2017. All sessions will last for one hour with wheelchairs provided.

Speaking about the Paralympic sports programme, Chairperson of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, Councillor Mary Garrity said;

“The Council is committed to providing more opportunities for our residents to get active more often and we are pleased to work in partnership with Disability Sport NI to provide this opportunity for young people as part of the Council’s inclusive leisure programme. This initiative reinforces the Council’s vision to develop the Sports, Leisure and Recreation infrastructure of the district as outlined in its Corporate Plan.”

Odhran Doherty, Disability Sport NI’s Active Clubs Co-ordinator for people with physical disabilities with Disability Sport NI added;

“we are delighted to work in partnership with Fermanagh and Omagh District Council to develop and facilitate this programme of multi – sport sessions for wheelchair users and their peers. With the recent success of our local athletes in Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, the interest in disability sport has never been higher. Our partnership with Fermanagh and Omagh District Council in delivering this new wheelchair sports programme will ensure that people with physical disabilities in the district have an opportunity to get involved in sport and active recreation within their local area”.

Participation on the programme is free, however places are limited and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.
