New season of Irish events and classes launched

Published: 29th August 2017

Fermanagh and Omagh District Council’s new season of Irish events and classes commences on Wednesday 6 September with an information night in the Strule Arts Centre, Omagh beginning at 7:30 pm.

This event will mark the launch of the programme of events for the coming term. Liam Ó’Flannagáin from Comhairle na Gaelscolaíochta will also be in attendance and will talk on the state and advantages of Irish language medium education.

Indeed, Wednesday nights in the Strule Arts Centre will provide much of the focus of this year’s programme. One of the highlights of the programme is the return of the weekly Irish language classes which start on Wednesday 13 September from 8 pm – 9.30 pm. Once again, the classes accommodate all abilities from beginners and improvers through to the more advanced student. The classes will run for a twelve week period.

Also returning to the programme is the Sean-nós and Set Dancing class which will take place in the Strule Arts Centre on Wednesday evenings from 6 pm – 7pm. These traditional forms of Irish solo and partnered dancing are a great social activity as well as a fun way of keeping fit.

Singing in Irish classes are also scheduled for Wednesday evenings from 7 pm – 8pm in the Strule Arts Centre where participants sing in a group setting. It is another pleasant social activity and a very effective way of improving one’s Irish.

Irish language classes will also run from September in outreach centres in Dromore, Trillick, Ederney and Greencastle as part of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council’s ” Irish in the community” scheme. For further information on these classes and all of the Council’s Irish language classes and activities, please contact Kevin Goodwin, Irish Language Officer by e-mail at kevin.goodwin@fermanaghomagh.com or by telephone on 028 822478311.
