Local sports stars recognised in new Hall of Fame at Omagh Leisure Complex

Published: 25th October 2016

Three sporting icons from the Omagh area had their sporting achievements officially recognised by Fermanagh and Omagh Sports Forum at Omagh Leisure Complex on Tuesday 18 October 2016.

Former Spurs and Northern Ireland International Footballer, Gerry Armstrong, Tyrone GAA Footballer and Ireland International compromise rules player, Matthew Donnelly and former Ulster and Ireland international Rugby Union player, Willie Anderson were the first inductees into the new Hall of Fame at Omagh Leisure Complex which now joins Fermanagh Lakeland Forum as a host venue for the Hall of Fame.

The Hall of Fame was established to honour local sportsmen and women who have achieved sporting success at national and international level by having information panels and photographs of each athlete displayed either at Fermanagh Lakeland Forum or Omagh Leisure Complex which will provide information on their sporting exploits and hopefully inspire future generations to attain and surpass the level of achievement of inductees. The Fermanagh and Omagh District Council Hall of Fame is managed by Fermanagh and Omagh Sports Forum on behalf of the Council.

Speaking at the opening of the Hall of Fame at Omagh Leisure Complex, the Chairperson of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, Mary Garrity, said

“This evening the sporting successes of Gerry Armstrong, Matthew Donnelly and Willie Anderson are being recognised.  They have been wonderful ambassadors for the district as sportsmen of the highest quality and their induction into the “Hall of Fame” will serve as a permanent historical record of their achievements

The Chairperson of Fermanagh and Omagh Sports Forum, Bernie Fox, commenting on the event said

“Fermanagh and Omagh Sports Forum is delighted to welcome the first three sportsmen to be in the Hall of Fame here at Omagh Leisure Complex. The Forum is delighted that three such eminent sportsmen who have achieved so much in their sporting careers will have their sporting achievements recognised in such a permanent way”.
