Irish language drama night at Strule Arts Centre

Published: 6th May 2016

The sixth annual Irish Language Drama Night ‘Oíche Drámaíochta’ will take place in the Strule Arts Centre, Omagh, on Thursday 19 May at 7.30pm.

The event, which has been organised by Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, promises a night of drama with a difference.

The programme includes Omagh adult drama group, Aisteoirí na hÓmaí, who will perform a short drama in Irish which has been written and directed by local funny man, ‘Bean’ Mc Caugherty and is based on the popular TV series Father Ted. The drama is a potpourri of hilarity and brings the Irish language into a contemporary setting.

Pupils from Christian Brothers Grammar School, Omagh will also take to the Strule Arts Centre stage to perform two short dramas. The first, ‘Scartha’ will mark the centenary of the 1916 Easter Rising.  Based on the life of two brothers from Rannafast, Co Donegal, this short drama tells the tale of how they fought with the Redmonite forces in the First World War and on how one of them returned to Ireland during the Irish War of Independence.  The second will see the school pupils perform a light hearted sketch called CBS Ukulele Orchestra.

As well as drama, there will be music on the night which will include a performance from the choir of Omagh Irish medium primary school, Gaelscoil na gCrann, singing in both Irish and English. Young traditional music group, Glór, from Carrickmore will also perform a selection of tunes and songs.

Tickets for the Irish Language Drama Night cost £5 and can be purchased from the Strule Arts Centre Box Office by telephoning 028 8224 7831 or visiting www.struleartscentre.co.uk.
