Fitness programme to get people from ‘Couch to 5k’

Couch to 5k launch 2016

Published: 13th June 2016

The popular ‘Couch to 5k’ fitness programme, which helps adults build up physical activity in a gradual and healthy way, is returning to Omagh.

The free 12-week fitness programme is being organised by Fermanagh and Omagh District Council in partnership with the Public Health Agency (PHA) and will start on Saturday 25 June 2016, 9.30 am at Omagh Leisure Complex.

Fully qualified Council activity coaches will lead the weekly walking and jogging sessions which are designed specifically for people who undertake little or no exercise. The activity coaches will also offer advice and support to programme participants to help them progress to an improved level of fitness.

Speaking about the ‘Couch to 5k’ programme, Chairperson of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, Councillor Mary Garrity, said:

“Fermanagh and Omagh District Council is pleased to work in partnership with the PHA once again to deliver the popular Couch to 5k programme in Omagh.

“The first steps to fitness are often the hardest. The Couch to 5k programme provides a welcoming and encouraging environment to help people improve their fitness levels in a gradual and healthy way.”

Colette Brolly, the PHA Lead on Physical Activity, said: “The programme is designed to influence behaviour changes in those who don’t regularly take part in physical activity and supports the PHA’s Choose to Live Better campaign encouraging people to get more active by taking their first steps to better health.

“Being physically active helps maintain a healthy weight and can reduce the risk of many diseases including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and some cancers. Being active is also good for your mental health and can lift mood and reduce anxiety. If you introduce changes in your life to increase physical activity, you will see big differences to your health and wellbeing.”
