The Christmas season was officially launched in Enniskillen on Saturday afternoon with the switching on of the Christmas lights.

The Chairperson of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, Councillor Mary Garrity, with assistance from Santa, had the honour of pressing the button to light up Enniskillen for Christmas 2016.

The switch on of the lights was the climax to a programme of festive entertainment throughout the afternoon which included performances from the Marty Fay Band, St Mary’s Silver Band and Ballyreagh Silver Band combined and Fermanagh Community Youth Gospel Choir. As well as the entertainment on stage, there was a feast of street entertainment and of course, the main man himself, Santa, appeared at the Townhall balcony to greet the crowd.

The switch on of the Christmas illuminations is just the beginning of a bumper package of events to celebrate the festive season in Enniskillen. The next event will be the Christmas Craft and Food Fair on Saturday 3 December, with stalls located in the Townhall and the Diamond, Enniskillen. On the following two Saturdays, 10 and 17 December, from 12 noon to 4.00pm, ‘Seasonal Saturdays’ will bring a mix of entertainment to the Diamond, with face painters, street entertainers and festive music.

The Chairperson, Councillor Mary Garrity said, “I was delighted to help in getting the Christmas season of to a start on Saturday in Enniskillen at the annual switch on of the Christmas Lights. It was great to see so many people in town, both attending the event and supporting our local shops. The next three Saturdays will also see a host of festive entertainment in town, and I urge everyone to come along to Enniskillen to enjoy the ambience of the occasion whilst shopping.”
