Council warns of bogus trader

Published: 29th June 2015

Fermanagh and Omagh District Council has recently become aware of a bogus trader, purporting to be acting on behalf of the Council, for the supply of carbon monoxide alarms.

It would appear that contact is being made by telephone with elderly or vulnerable members of the public to encourage them to purchase the alarms and in doing so to supply bank details over the phone for the cost of same.

The Council wishes to inform the public that no such arrangement has been put in place by the Council with any supplier of Carbon Monoxide alarms and warns against providing any details of either a personal nature or bank account over the phone should they receive such a call. Anyone who has recently been approached in a similar manner should report it immediately to the PSNI on the non-emergency telephone number: 101

The Council wishes to advise the public that it never authorises a company to make contact by telephone to sell a product on its behalf or to ask for bank details for payments.

A spokesperson on behalf of the Council said, “Any contact the Council makes with the public in relation to Council services will be through personal contact by authorised staff who will have Council-issued identification. If anyone is not fully satisfied that the ID is genuine, or requires reassurance regarding the authenticity of a caller, they should make immediate contact with the Council on 0300 303 1777 to verify the  caller’s details.”
