Published: 4th March 2016

Information events for people with disabilities in relation to Fermanagh and Omagh District Council services have taken place in Omagh and Enniskillen.

The ‘Your Council, Your Way, Your Say’ events were organised by the Council to highlight its services and to hear from those in attendance on how it could make its services more accessible to people with a disability.

Speaking about the importance of the ‘Your Council, Your Way, Your Say’ events, Chairman of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, Councillor Thomas O’Reilly, said:

“It is vital that we as a Council are providing efficient and effective services which meet the needs of a diverse and ever-changing local community. The only way we can do this effectively is by hearing what services work and what changes would improve our service to people with a disability.”

As part of the event programme, Councillor Debbie Coyle, Fermanagh and Omagh District Council’s Diversity Champion, facilitated feedback sessions where attendees were encouraged to share their experience of accessing Council services.

Attendees were also provided with information about the Council and its additional services available for people with a disability in relation to job applications and interviews; refuse collections; and accessing Council venues, events and programmes.

Council Officers also explained the Council’s commitment to including at least one piece of inclusive play equipment in all new play areas and outlined plans to introduce a Radar Key facility to all new and refurbished public conveniences in the district. The Radar Key facility will provide those who sign up to the scheme with 24/7 access to public conveniences.

Attendees were also updated about the development of a new Community Plan for the district – which aims to improve social, economic and environmental well-being of residents – and were encouraged to get involved in the process.

The ‘Your Council, Your Way, Your Say’ events took place in the Strule Arts Centre, Omagh on Tuesday 1 March and the Townhall, Enniskillen on Thursday 3 March 2016.
