Council Chairman launches Novice Ireland Strongest Man Competition

Published: 20th April 2016

For the first time ever, the Novice Ireland Strongest Man Competition will be held in Omagh on Bank Holiday Monday, 2 May 2016.

Taking place at Drumragh Avenue Car Park and the OASIS Plaza, the competition will be across five feats of strength with the winner taking home the Finn McCool Trophy. The competitions are:

  • The Duck Walk Challenge – a 2-lane race for 20 metres carrying 200kg
  • The Axel Press for Maximum Weight
  • Car Deadlift Hold.
  • Five Stones of strength – 100kf, 115kg, 130kg, 145kg, 160kg onto Barrels
  • Monster Tyre Flip for 20 metres, Head to Head in Two Lanes.

The competitions take place from 12:00 noon – 4:00pm, and to ensure a great afternoon of family fun there is a programme of face painting, balloon modelling, Virtual Reality Simulators, a bucking bronco sheep and street entertainers on the OASIS Plaza.

Speaking at the launch of the Novice Ireland Strongest Man Competition, the Chairman of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, Councillor Thomas O’Reilly said that the event promised to be a Bank Holiday outing with a difference for local families and visitors. “The feats of strength which the competitors will undertake are quite astonishing and should be very entertaining to watch. The participants are very well trained so I would say ‘Don’t try this at home!”

Councillor O’Reilly added that he was delighted to see the OASIS Plaza being used for these events which bring people into the town centre, boosting the local economy. “The Plaza has been a very positive addition to the streetscape of Omagh, and is gaining a growing reputation as a venue for outdoor events”, he said.

With the strongest man feats taking place in Drumragh Avenue Car Park, the car park will be closed to parking all day on Monday 2 May. However, alternative parking is available at County Hall Car Park on Drumragh Avenue.

The Novice Ireland Strongest Man 2016 Competition is open to anyone who has never won a strongest man event. Anyone wishing to compete should register by visiting the Facebook page of the Irish Strength Association or their website: www.irishstrongman.com
