Primary school pupils from Teemore, Killesher, Derrylin and Kinawley have been learning about local heritage through Christmas themed straw craft.

Organised by Fermanagh and Omagh District Council’s Museum Service in partnership with the Aughakillymaude Strawcraft Centre, the strawcraft programme involved 140 primary school pupils discovering more about local cultural heritage through music with Gary Fitzpatrick and storytelling with Seamas MacAnnaidh.

The children also learned about the strawcraft tradition and with assistance from artist Steffi Otto, created their very own strawcraft Christmas angels to take home and display.

As part of the programme, the primary school pupils had the opportunity to view Fermanagh County Museum’s toy collection which features toys from a bygone era and, continuing with the Christmas theme, Father Christmas paid a surprise visit to the Aughakillymaude Strawcraft Centre, much to the children’s delight!

The Christmas themed strawcraft programme is part of the Council’s Museum Service Fermanagh Heritage Gateway outreach initiative which is ongoing while Enniskillen Castle is being redeveloped. The programme took place in the Aughakillymaude Strawcraft Centre, which complements the existing Mummers Centre. The Aughakillymaude Strawcraft Centre was grant aided by SWARD, NITB, Fermanagh and Omagh District Council and Aughakillymaude Community Association.
