1916 Somme Commemoration Events

Published: 8th November 2016

Fermanagh and Omagh District Council will hold two events on the evening of Friday 18th November 2016 to remember all those who lost their lives in or were affected by the Battle of the Somme which took place over a four month period in 1916.

The events will take place simultaneously at the OASIS Plaza, Omagh and the events space at Broadmeadow, Enniskillen commencing at 7.00 pm.

The events are planned in a spirit of remembering and commemoration and the date chosen for the events marks the exact centenary of the end of the bloodiest battle of World War I. The programme at each location will include the lighting of a beacon, music, poetry readings and a minute’s silence.

These events have been devised and developed by Fermanagh and Omagh District Council’s Remembering and Commemoration Working Group. This cross-party group comprising of twelve councillors was established to provide oversight and direction to the Council’s delivery of and support to events, activities, projects and programmes marking the centenaries of the events of 1916.
