About the Event

‘A Taste of Culture, Spinning a Yarn’, a family friendly event celebrating the rich variety of cultures, traditions and languages within the district will take place at the Ulster American Folk Park, Omagh on Saturday 17 June 2017.

The multi-cultural event, which is organised by Fermanagh and Omagh District Council in partnership with other key stakeholders, provides visitors with the opportunity to find out more about the diversity of cultures within the Fermanagh and Omagh district.

Building on last year’s highly successful event, this year’s “Taste of Culture” event has even more to offer. Visitors will not only have an opportunity to sample international cuisine, they will also be able to enjoy additional attractions like storytelling, rhyme time and crafts.

This year’s theme ‘Spinning a Yarn’ can be interpreted in two ways; in the telling of a story and the process of spinning wool and craft making.

Author and storyteller, Madeline McCully will be there on the day along with women from Omagh Ethnic Communities Support Group who will share stories from their respective homelands and also share their own personal migration stories. A variety of crafts such as weaving, ethnic embroidery, quilt making and candle dipping will be demonstrated throughout the park. The public will also be treated to multi- cultural dancing and music and will have a chance to try out barn dancing.

The event, which runs from 11.00am – 4.00pm, will give visitors a better understanding of cultures other than their own in a fun and relaxed way.

“A Taste of Culture” is being delivered by Fermanagh and Omagh District Council in partnership with National Museums NI, the Mellon Centre for Migration Studies, Libraries NI, Omagh Ethnic Communities Support Group and Goodwill Gifts Support Group. The event has received financial support from Fermanagh and Omagh District Council’s Good Relations Programme assisted by the Executive Office.

General park admission rates apply to this event.
